History of Verses Over Lines

In 2013, OutWords began its first inter-district youth poetry slam. In collaboration with Clovis High, OutWords students from Edison and Fresno High competed against students from Clovis High. The name of our event sprang from, then Clovis High English Instructor, Lou Standifer. We wanted to value our youths’ voices over boundaries. We wanted to take their verses over the lines drawn between us. And thus, Verses Over Lines was born.

This gathering of amazing poetry from youth voices continued in 2014. In 2015, VoL expanded to include students from Merced and Visalia. And after a three year hiatus, OutWords is excited for the return of Verses Over Lines! What’s more, we are extending our invitation to all high schools and organizations in the Central Valley area. From Stanislaus County to Tulare County, OutWords is inviting all high school youth to converge onto Fresno in April 2019 for our 4th installment of VoL, making it our biggest gathering of the brightest youth poets!
